Sense of belonging with/without cultural skills (language)

Jennifer Taing's thesis explores the relationship between heritage language (skills and contextual use), sense of belonging, and multicultural identity among second-generation adults in North America. She is conducting three studies to capture the complexity and richness of this relationship.

Study 1: Cultural identities, language, sense of belonging, and social network among second-generation Canadians.

How to participate?

 

  • Content of your participation :

    • The study takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Your participation in this research consists of completing a series of questions about the following :

      • Sociodemographic information;

      • Competencies and usage of your heritage language;

      • Degree of cultural identification and social inclusion;

      • Social network;

      • Some questions about your experiences in the context of the pandemic (COVID-19).

  • To participate, you must be:

    • 18 years old and older;

    • Born in Canada or immigrated to Canada during childhood (before 5 years old) aka second-generation;

    • Have not lived more than five years outside of Canada during childhood or adolescence;

    • Coming from a family where at least one parent was born outside of Canada (migrant);

    • The heritage language of the migrant parent(s) must not be English or French.

Study 2 : The relationship between heritage language skills, sense of belonging and cultural identities

      • Degree of cultural identification and social inclusion;

      • Some questions about your experiences in the context of the pandemic (COVID-19).

 

  • To participate, you must be:

    • 18 years of age or over;

    • Born in Canada or immigrated to Canada during childhood (before 5 years old) aka second-generation;

    • Have not lived more than five years outside of Canada during childhood or adolescence;

    • Coming from a family where at least one parent was born outside of Canada (migrant);

    • The heritage language of the migrant parent(s) must not be English or French;

    • Your heritage language must be Spanish or Chinese Mandarin.
